FAQ
what focal length should I bring
A telephoto lens with a minimum focal length of 200mm is recommended for wildlife photography in the Pantanal. A longer lens in the 300-500mm range is ideal, especially for photographing jaguars and more distant subjects along the riverbanks. One of the advantages of the Pantanal is how close wildlife encounters can be - particularly from the boat - so having a versatile range is helpful. For closer encounters and environmental shots, a 70-200mm or wider lens works well. We can also go over your gear before the trip to help you feel confident in what you bring and tailor recommendations to your goals.
What will the weather be like?
September falls within the dry season in the Pantanal, bringing warm temperatures, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. The days are typically hot (30°C – 35°C / 86°F – 95°F), with cooler mornings and evenings (18°C – 22°C / 64°F – 72°F). Conditions are generally dry with clear skies, though occasional short rain showers are still possible. You can expect beautiful light, calm mornings on the water, and vibrant sunsets. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, along with sun protection such as hats, sunscreen, and long sleeves.
What are the chances of seeing target species?
The Pantanal is widely regarded as the best place in the world to see jaguars in the wild, with consistently high sighting success, especially in the Meeting of the Waters region. While wildlife is never guaranteed, guests typically have daily sightings throughout the trip.
You may find yourself watching these powerful and elusive cats lounging along the riverbanks, stalking prey, swimming between shores, or caring for their young, offering rare and intimate photographic moments in the wild.
What other wildlife can we expect to see?
In addition to jaguars, the Pantanal is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Common sightings include giant river otters, capybaras, caimans, coatis, tapirs, yellow anacondas, and howler and capuchin monkeys. The region is also a paradise for birdlife, with frequent opportunities to photograph species such as hyacinth macaws, toco toucans, jabiru storks, wood storks, great egrets, herons, kingfishers, and black-collared hawks. The richness of this ecosystem provides constant opportunities for wildlife photography throughout the trip.
what level of fitness is required?
This tour does not require a high level of physical fitness. Most activities take place from the boat, with minimal walking involved. Guests should be comfortable sitting for extended periods, getting in and out of boats, and spending long days outdoors in warm conditions.
will there be wifi or cell service?
WiFi is available at the floatel via Starlink, providing reliable internet access during your stay at the lodge. While connectivity may be limited or unavailable while out on the water during safaris, you’ll be able to stay connected, upload images, and check in when back at the floatel.
Do I need to be a photographer to enjoy this trip?
No. While this trip is designed with photographers in mind, it is open to anyone who enjoys wildlife and safari experiences. The pace of this trip is intentionally slower and more patient, prioritizing time with wildlife, waiting for behavior, trying creative angles and composition, and working with light rather than rushing between sightings. Non-photographers often find this approach immersive and rewarding, offering a deeper connection to the landscape and wildlife through observation and time in the field.
